The Northern Track & Field championships took place over the weekend at Sports City in Manchester. Rarely can one club have dominated an event as much as LPS did in the senior 400m event with four athletes reaching the final and all running under 50 sec. Harry Doran was 2nd (47.82), Danny Higham 3rd (48.96),Luke Edwards 4th (48.96) and WayneAshall 8th (49.80). In addition Adam Thomson (50.20) & Jesse Roberts (51.74)were both eliminated in the heats. In addition Emma Givens was 5th in the senior women’s 100m hurdles (15.44)and 8th in 100m (13.2) Amelia Jennings-McLaughlin took silver in the U20W High Jump (1.70m), while Emma Givens was 5th in SW 100m hurdles( 15.44)& 8th in
100m (13.2)The schools championships also took place on Saturday with athletes trying to achieve the qualifying standards for the English schools championships next month. Ed Latimer won the IB 400m Lancashire title at Wigan in 50.9 with Joe Milton winning the IB 400m Merseyside title at Bebington in 51.9.This was an outstanding return in one day for the training group of Tricia Farrell & Ray Twentyman.
High jumpers, Kai Finch (1.75m)and Owen Southern (1.60m)continued their dominance of the U15 age group with a gold & silver at Bebington. Sadie McNulty also took silver (1.40m)in the U15G high jump. Dominic O’Hanlon took gold in SB long jump (6.04m)& triple jump (11.70m) and Matthew Low bronze in IB triple jump (10.89).Evelyn Smalley was 3rd in IG long jump (4.42m)& will be pleased with her 27.3 sec time in 200m. Erin Birchall (JG)ran 14.1 in 100m & recorded 4.43m in long jump.
Matty Richardson (IB)ran a well judged race to win gold in 800m (2:06.4) and Emily Brough (6G)revealed her potential with a win at the same distance (2:36.2).
There were pb’s set by Joe Houghton JB 800m (2:24.1)& Joe Martin IB 1500m (4:44.2)while twins Alex (2:36.7)& Megan (2:37.7)Barnsley both recorded season best performances.
Lancashire Schools Track & Field Championships
There were some excellent performances at the Lancashire schools championships at Robin Park with 3 athletes achieving the qualifying standards for the English schools. Tom Climpson JB javelin (43.19m),
Jade Murphy JG High Jump (1.57m) and Ed Latimer IB 400m (50.9).in addition, there were victories for Flossie Dickinson IG 1500m (5:23.7)and Lucy Townson IG 300m hurdles (57.1).
Jack Crook IB 800m was tantalisingly close to running sub 2 minutesfor the first time but had to settle for 2:00.0 in second place. Holly
Miller JG (2:38.4), Fran Price JG (2:39.2) & Jonathon Bride SB (2:02.08) all competed at the same distance. Three junior boys ran the 1500m, Adam Jones (4:45.0), Ross Harrison (4:49.0)and Tom Dickinson (4:53.6)
but were all out of the medal positions. The only medal joy from the sprinters came in the form of Lauren Lewis’s silver medal in the JG 100m (13.3). Morgan Greaves Thomas SB
11.7 and Ed Townson JB 14.9 also ran 100m with Henry Latimer a creditable 43.2 in the JB 300m
Rock N’ Roll Marathon weekend
At the Rock N’ Roll marathon weekend, Lisa Gawthorne had a successful run in the 5K event finishing second lady in a time of 19;47
