Harry Doran`s progress as a 800m runner continues. After posting early season times of 1.54 and then 1.51 he went to the British Miler`s Club graded meet at Manchester`s Sportcity. Still learning the two lap event he ran a more balanced race winning in an excellent 1.49.41 which marginally shades his personal best and consolidates his club position as the second fastest of all time behind the redoubtable Michael Rimmer. An invitation to the World Trials beckons on this showing.
On Sunday saw star high-jumper Amelia Jennings-McLaughlin at the invitational Bedford International Games. Jumping well in a near biblical downpour the junior finished second only to UK number 1 Isobel Pooley. Whilst the height 1.74m was modest by her own high standards, her competitive spirit and ability to cope in adverse weather were first class.
Another Liverpool Pembroke Sefton star, Kirsty Longley, managed to squeeze the evening Birchwood Brook 5K race into her busy life as a mother. The course took competitors through woods, paths and roads, finishing on a muddy track. In Kirsty`s own words she felt `amazing’ and led the ladies from the start, although there were some good Cheshire females present. She not only won comfortably but chased down most of the men finishing third overall in a time of 18.05 and `could have carried on for another 5K!’ The season has some tasty prospects for this bubbling personality.
