Below is taken from the London Gazette 17th September 1917
“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a post. He was attacked on both flanks by superior numbers, and repulsed one party with Lewis gun. It then jammed, and he retired to a shell hole in the rear, from which he brought rifle fire to bear on the enemy as they entered the post, finally retiring still further and regaining touch with the front line on his rear being threatened by another party of the enemy. His action disorganised the enemy’s attack until reinforcements were to hand.”
