LPS take top two spots at World Biathlon Championships Ormskirk`s Courtney Birch is a world champion. The Oxford University student easily won the gold medal at the World Biathlon Championships in Bavaria. The Biathlon is a sport rapidly growing in popularity. It consists of a gruelling 1500m run followed by a 200m swim in a lake and finishing with another 1500m run. She beat off challengers from over a dozen countries to take the Junior Women’s title for Great Britain. Astonishingly the silver medallist is another member of the Ormskirk-based Liverpool Pembroke Sefton Athletic Club. Maria Barrett who finished second to Courtney in the British Championships repeated her performance here and was comfortably clear of the third placed girl. Club Development Officer Charles Gains says `We are extremely proud of Courtney and Maria. They both work very hard at their sport and deserve this honour. I understand it was a very emotional experience when they stood on the podium listening to the National Anthem and watching the Union Jack being raised’. 4th September 2004 |
