| Great start to the 2003 track season! The Senior men set out on their season’s trek. A few weeks earlier Blackpool had proved the setting for a resurgence in club distance running as our 12 man team raced along the  Merrik Bousfield promenade to finish 15th in the North. Now Stanley Park a few miles away was the venue for a demonstration of our emerging track and field power. Even after a controversial disqualification in the 4 x 100m relay the club ended up winners(361) comfortably clear of Derby(329) and Leeds(296). The team was a mixture of young emerging talent and experienced `old timers’. Star performer was the now greying Mark Line who rattled up 4 victories…A Discus(38.6) and B victories Hammer(36.19), Javelin(45.44), Pole Vault(3.60) and Triple Jump(10.43). Lending a hand was Steve Rogers who flew in yet again from Frankfurt to win the Javelin(53.81) and also take several other minor placing. With Merrik Bousfield stalking around and scoring well in the throws LPS were clearly dominant in the field.Not to be outdone our young track stars were also all over the place scoring points with Phil Taylor running a very dominant 200m in 22.6 to win and gleefully watching as Danny Holland repeated the task in the B event in 23.3. Earlier Michael Zaim had taken the B 100m in 11.6. Another double came in the 3000m as Henry Stewart and Mark Donoghue stretched the field and finished close together in fast times. At 1500m Michael Rimmer ran even quicker than the previous week in 4.01.8 but could only finish 3rd. Ben Jones, however, was dominant in the B event in 4.10.7. In spite of the disappointment of the short sprint relay the afternoon was capped with a very convincing win at 4 x 400. Everywhere there were numerous excellent performances. The Premier League title looks there for the taking and (dare I say?) another shot at BAL qualification. Not to be outdone our Senior Women went to Trafford and repeated the story. Nicola Gunderson’s 400/800m double in 61.0 and 2.18 was impressive.  Alan Woods Katy Green took two firsts in the B 200m and 400m in 28.7 and 62.6. Kiera Vogel and Marie Barrett teamed up in the 3000m to take both prime spots in 10.05.1 and 10.11.29. As in the men’s matches there were stacks of good placing. Particularly nice though was the return of Debbie Janson (Rankin) who with Kerry Massey accumulated masses of points in the throws. After an exciting count LPS won on 187.5 points to Trafford’s 184.5 and West Cheshire 178.5. Results |
| Young Athletes open with a 3rd place In their opening fixture under the new format of combined boy & girls teams LPS finished third behind Sale and Blackpool. I have no report so I will give what I have at this time, Adam Morris won the under 17 long jump and 200 and Robert Stock ran a bp in the 1500 with 4.11. Disappointing Entries at Merseyside Champs
 Three of our medal winners at the Merseyside Champs, Nicola Gundersen,(2nd U20 800m) Nicola Bear (1st U17 800m), and Lindsay Doyle (2nd Senior Womens 1500m. Merseyside Officials must wonder which way to turn next after having explored most options in a bid to stimulate interest in their T&F Championships at Wavertree. A single day of events and entries on the day failed to pull in the athletes. LPS once again came away with yet another haul of medals. A very relaxed Michael Rimmer cruised to an easy victory in the Under 20 400m in an excellent 49.4. Other winners included Ben Jones at 1500m, also in the Under 20s, Carl Williams taking the Under 17 Steeplechase and Joe McKenna the Under 15 800m. Additionally Andrew Wignall collected the Under 20 100m hurdles title and Kerry Massey the Javelin title in her age group. |
| Young Athletes second at Stockport In their second outing of the season LPS young athletes made the short journey to Stockport, with a number of gaps in the girls section we did well to beat our local rivals SWAC when we finished second behind Leeds. It is important that you leave as few gaps as possible if you are to compete with the best at this level. Our girl’s throwers made up for some of these gaps with some well needed points. The boys also had problems with most of our sprinters be unavailable for one reason or another. After two fixture we have made a steady if unspectacular but will need to have full teams if we are to progress. 18th May 2003 |
| Host of PBs at Trafford In the first Trafford open meeting of the season LPS athletes came away with a host of personal best. In the under 17s 3,00 Robert Stocks ran 9:08:4 and Carl Williams 9:24:3. In the under 20 3k David Phillips ran 9:25:8. The 1500 saw Ben Jones run 4:00:52 in the under 20 race , while Adam Clansey ran 4:13:0 in the senior race. Mark Leicester turned in a 2;01:69 in the under 17’s 800 and Andrew Donaldson 2:01:42 in the under 20 race. Mike Rimmer made his first outing over 800 this season with a 1:53:35 20th May 2003 |
| New Club Record from Michael Rimmer In his only his third outing over 800 this season Michael Rimmer set a new club record with 1:50:00. This beats his own record of 1:50:55 set last August. Michael who won the Northern Under 20s 800 at Wavertree on the 25 May has once again this season shown the type of form that has made him one the most promising talents over this distance in the country. 31st May 2003 |
