| Four Shot Titles for LPS LPS athletes have won four shot titles, Dave Readle won the U/20 AAA indoor title with a throw of 15.57. This was after picking up the bronze in the senior event with a throw of 16.23. This puts Dave in the U.K top 10 for indoors, and exceeds the European qualifying distance. At the same championship Anthony Gallager won the silver in the U/15s with a personal best of 13.90. Anthony is the top U.K athlete in his age group, and took a competitor from Ireland to beat him. | Gill Darby wins Llantysilio Fell Race Gill Darby won the ladies event at the Llantysilio fell race on Saturday. The race from the Sun Inn in Llangollen is a cat AM race over seven and a half miles with a climb of 2600 feet. Her winning time was 67.02 mins. 8th March 1999 |
| Courtney Birch wins English Schools Courtney Birch won the English Schools at Luton last weekend and is looking forward to the National Cross Country this Saturday at Newark. LPS will have teams in both U/15 & U/13 girls races . Kiera Vogel winner of the Northern U/13 race at Sheffield in January will be in the LPS team who will be defending their National title. 9th March 1999 |
| Birch wins National Cross Country for second year, Vogel takes a silver. Courtney Birch added the National U/15 title to the English Schools title she won last week. In her first year in this age group she took the lead just after 1km Courtney was never troubled and won by over 60 meters. A delighted Courtney was backed up by a strong LPS squad who narrowly missed out on medals. Kiera Vogel took the silver medal in the U/13 race after moving strongly through the field. Another successful day for the LPS young girls who are backed by a loyal band of coaches and parents. They are a fine advertisement for our club. LPS senior men’s team suffered a number of late withdrawals in the last few days leading up to the Championships. Solid runs by those athletes available was enough for LPS to finish in 20 team place out of 130 teams. Only 5 other Northern teams beat us. Rob Berry our first man home in 89 place. | Steve Garland 2nd at Northumberland International Decathlon A good weekend for Steve Garland at the Northumberland International Decathlon which saw him finish second overall behind a top Brazilian. Steve’s results are as follows 100m 11.5, LJ 6.28, Sp 10.14, HJ 1.85, 400m 49.84 110h 16.64, DT 33.20, PV 4.00, JT 43.21, 1500m 4.33.6 Total score 6350 a nice season opener. At other events this weekend Dave Readle throw the shot 15.58 at the Loughbrough fixture. Paul Cadwallader was 7 in the Chester half marathon, in 70.28. | LPS Finish 20th in National 12 Stage A fine team run by our senior men saw us finish 20th place in 4.26.11 at the National 12 stage at Sutton Park on 24 April. Rob Berry on leg 1 was fastest on the long stage with 26.57 and John Rice 15.53 on leg 2 was the quickest on the short stage. Liverpool Harriers came 29th in 4.30.04 and Wirral A.C 46th in 4.38.46 The North of England had 10 teams in the top 20. No date |

| Steve Garland second in BUSA Decathlon Decathlete Steve Garland was beaten by 9 points at the weekend in the BUSA champs by Brendan McConville from Northern Ireland despite running a Pb in the last event the 1500 McConville hung to finish 0.2 of a second behind Steve when Steve needed him to be 1.8 sec’s behind to win. | Anthony Gallagher wins ESAA Another fine performance from Anthony Gallagher won him his first English Schools title at the weekend. A throw of 14.69 was enough to make him the clear winner of the junior boys shot title. Courtney Birch was also a medal winner finishing 3 in the 1,500 meters in 4.39 10th July 1999 |
| LPS Young Athletes perform well at NoEAA Champs Luke Statter , Anthony Gallagher and Courtney Birch all picked up NoEAA titles at Grantham. Statter won the U/15 long jump with 6.16 for his first Northern title. Anthony Gallagher added the U/15 shot title to his recent English schools title with a throw of 13.9. In a busy weekend Anthony also won bronze medals in both hammer and discus. Courtney Birch won the U/15 1500 in 4.41.5 to add to her bronze medal won in this event at the English schools earlier this month. Danny Holland also picked up a bronze in the U/15 100m in 11.8. Nicola Gunderson finished fourth and just missed out on a medal in U/15 800 in 2,23.7. Other LPS finalist during the Champs, Michael Ziam 6th in U/17 100 in 11.7, Henry Stewart 10th in U/17 1500 in 4.19.2, Mark Donoghue 4th in U/17 1500mS/chase in 4.46.9, Chris Watson 5th in U/15 1500 in 4.30.2, and Alan Stewart 5th in U/15 3000m in 9.49.2. | Solid Team Performance at Telford LPS Senior Men’s A Team turned in a solid team performance in their last National league fixture of the season at Telford to finish 4th on the day just missing out on 3rd place by 3 points. This left them with a final league position of 4th, thus ensuring their league status for another season. | LPS win team event at Liverpool Int Half Marathon (8-8-99) A strong turn out by LPS athletes at the Liverpool International half marathon resulted in a victory in the team race and two County medals for LPS athletes. Nathan Vengdaslerm 69.00 who was also running for England in the International event (which England also won) lead home the LPS team followed by Cameron Brooks 73.56 and Dave Shaw 74.13. Paul Cadwallader 69.59 although not a scorer in the LPS winning team also won a County medal. 8th August 1999 |
| Steve Garland wins Home Countries Decathlon Steve Garland capped off an impressive season with a win in the Home Countries Decathlon held at Aberdeen over the weekend. Competing for England against Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland Steve produced a couple of PBs over the weekend to win with total score of 6676 points. Steve is the 3rd winner from our Club of this event. Alex Kruger won it in 1987 and Steve Roger won it in 1995. | Courtney Birch wins AAA , John Rice gets G.B under 19 call up(18-08-99) Courtney Birch added the AAA under 15s 1500m title her impressive list at the weekend. In a new PB of 4.35 Courtney was a clear winner at Sheffield. Anthony Gallagher hurt his finger in the discus competition and finished 6 with 43.04, the damaged finger hindered Anthony in his strong event the shot which he finished 4 in with 13.84. John Rice has wins his first GB vest this weekend at the Under 19 match in Berlin against Germany, France and Poland, a fine reward for a good season at the steeplechase. Also getting his first vest is Liverpool’s Chris Giblin at the high jump. 18th August 1999 |

| Garland wins Northumberland Hour Classic Steve Garland kept up his winning form over the Bank holiday weekend with a win in the Northumberland One Hour Decathlon held on 30 August. | Poor Performance at Northern Road Relay (2-10-99) LPS just scraped home to qualify for the National six stage relay. In what turned out to be a disappointing performance for the Club they came home in 25 position. 2nd October 1999 |
| Snape takes County 10k title Tom Snape captured the Merseyside County 10k title in the City of Liverpool 10k. Tom just held off the fast finishing Lee Cadwallader to take his first senior title. in a field of over 2000 Tom came 9th and Lee 10th. | Bronze for Under 15 girls at Northern Road relays LPS under 15 girls picked bonze medals at Stanley Park Blackpool in the NoEAA road relays. Steady running by Nicloa Gunderson on leg one who came home 7 in 11:36 was matched by Katie Wilson who brought us into 4 place with a fine run of 11:33. this left Kiera Vogel to lift us into the medals with a fine run of 11:14 17th October 1999 |
| LPS second at Beacon Park Opener A hail storm in the middle of the senior race welcomed in the new Liverpool & District season on what is the best cross country course in the league. Mike Girvan the race winner was well supported by Warrington team mates who elected not to take up their invitation at the National 6 stage. A strong turn out by LPS athletes saw them contain Liverpool to only a small lead. Wirral the other L&D team at the National suffered the most from the conflict of the two fixtures. Due to the weather the Manx team could not be assured return travel and decided not to make the jorney. | LPS pack 6 in 24 to take over at the top of L&D A strong team performance at Arrowe Park saw LPS take over at the top of the Liverpool & District league. A 29 point lead by Liverpool Harriers after the first fixture was turned into a 10 point lead for LPS after this second fixture, this leaves the league wide open for the final match at Halewood on 11 December. | Young LPS thrower gets England call (26-11-99) Anthony Gallagher the AAA under 15 shot champion has been selected to represent England Schools in an indoor schools home international fixture at Cardiff on 27 February 2000. This is a just reward for Anthony a pupil at Maricourt school, who has worked hard with his coach Merrik Bousfield during the past year. A delighted Anthony will join Courtney Birch as an LPS schools international. 26th November 1999 |
| LPS hold on to L&D title at Halewood Good packing by LPS saw them hold off a strong challenge from Liverpool H in the final league fixture. Going into the match with a 10 point lead LPS ended up increasing that to 25 points. A very wet and demanding course was a suitable test for the athletes in the final L&D fixture of the century. Paul Cadwallader was second overall but not is unable to score till after Christmas. Jon Rice celebrated his call up for the North of England fixture at Brussels next weekend by finishing third. A special mention for Dave Fairclough (V/45) who showed he still has what it takes when the going gets tough to make the final counter in 34 place. Gill Darby who also found the course to her liking, sealed a good day by being first lady home. 11th December 1999 |
| Busy weekend for LPS (19-12-99) A busy weekend before Christmas saw LPS athletes competing far and wide as well as locally. Stan Cottier the popular club vets secretary was the winner of the club Christmas handicap at West Derby. Tom Snape won the Hale 5 from Paul Cadwallader. Jon Rice was running at Brussels in the IAFF meeting and was 4th counter for the North of England. In Glasgow Chris Watson was 3rd in the U/15 Reebok fixture backed up by Alan Stewart in 5th and Simon McGlone in 34. In the U/17 race Henry Stewart was 13, Tom Wade 31, Mark Donoghue37 and Daniel Taylor 58. 19th December 1999 |
| Colin Jones wins Speke 10k Christmas cheer for LPS track men as Colin Jones, Jon Rice and Mark Barrow carried off the team race at the annual Boxing day 10k. Winning his first open road race Colin shook off the strong challenge from Liverpool Harriers Joey Parkinson with Jon Rice in 3rd spot. This win was on the back of Tom Snape’s fine win from Paul Cadwallader at the Hale 5 last week makes it a happy Christmas for the LPS men’s winter road campaign. 26th December 1999 |
