After a season that started with major difficulties imposed on our throwers through the withdrawl of facilities, they came good with a vengence at the Southport & Waterloo open meeting on Saturday. In the interests of expediency the organisers let all age groups, boys and girls throw together in one competition for each of the throws. This made for a wonderful group atmosphere … and the group responded.
LPS mobbed the throws with 5 in the shot and discus and 7 in the javelin. Young Ben Harding moved his U15 javelin over 27m, Zac Ellis pushed his U17 javelin to 45.47m and Ruth Doran had yet another good shot with 10.79m. She’ll excel at Gateshead when she goes to Newcastle Uni. Alex McSweeney set PB’s in the U15 shot, discus and javelin hitting 11.58m, 32.84m and 46.40m. The last was a national standard, club record and moves him to # 13 in the UK rankings.
But pride-of-place must go to young Lucy Staunton-Turner. The U13, in her first ever competition, threw a club record 32.34m to enter the UK rankings at # 3 !
There were other LPS athletes at the Litherland meet but, unfortunately, I am unable to report on them; with the exception of Billy Williams. Our top high-jumper had a good clearance at 1.80m and missed 1.85m by a hairs breadth. Good to see him coming back towards his 1.90m+ form again.
