Liverpool Pembroke Sefton are facing the the uncomfortable truth that their position in Division 2W of the North of England Senior Athletic League is under imminent threat. The second league match at Wavertree saw them finish last as the other five clubs gathered their squads together far more competently than LPS. A mini-inquest was under way before the match was even over.
That is not to say that there were no good individual performances. Among double A & B wins probably the most memorable was Jai Vernon-McGuigan’s victory in the 5000m. He simply scorched away leaving one or two experienced opponents wondering what was happening. His time of 15.30 was not a personal best but a significant indication of his improving fitness. Team mate Alistair Nelson will remember his first senior match as he recorded a super 16.11.6 to lead home the second strings. Nathan Hilton(49.4) and Wayne Ashall (50.0) replicated this at 400m as did high jumpers Amelia McLaughlin(1.68m) and Kate Doran(1.55m). The men’s relay teams took both the 4 x 100m (44.2) and 4 x 400m (3.24.1).
There were numerous other significant inputs especially from super-vet Mark Line but an optimistic feature was the arrival of several promising youngsters on the senior scene and they hold out hope for an immediate club resurgence. It was a beautiful day in Liverpool and although the sun didn’t shine on LPS on this occasion team managers will be working hard on the next match. The situation is not beyond recovery and there is a reputation here at stake. Club members will surely respond.
