Jai in fine form at Birmingham
The weather this winter has been very kind to cross country runners and there was no exception at Birmingham`s Cofton Park for the Inter-counties Championships. The fine conditions and superb organisation contributed to a great televised spectacle. Jai Vernon-McGuigan running for Merseyside had another good run and was not intimidated by the talent around him, his raking stride carrying him to a very creditable 18th. This confirmed his high Northern representative standing and he goes to the Home Countries international in Glasgow with loads of confidence. Barely half a minute off this pace was Ben Costello, also Merseyside, who has transformed himself into a formidable runner in the last 12 months reflected in his 33rd position. He could be up there with Jai next winter.
At Under 17 LPS had two athletes in the shape of James Grundy (Merseyside) who was 104th and Ryan Blackwell(Lancashire) who was 111th. In the Senior Women`s race Courtney Birch (Oxfordshire) confirmed her resurgence finishing 54th. Twelve months serious training could see her among the best in the country.
