Last weekend saw a number of LP&S athletes in Championship action of one form or another. For some of the younger ones the objective was more about giving themselves a chance at English Schools’ selection.
As seems to be the norm, two of Dave McCombs high jumpers have done just that. Sandy Clarkson claimed the Northern U20 title with 1.94m Ironically he pushed Tom Kwissa (with 1.93m to his credit), one spot further down the rankings but it would be unlucky if both of them didn’t make it.
U20 decathlete Jamie Hopkins had a busy weekend with 4 events the best of which was his 1.91 high jump, his place in the ESAA combined events looked assured too.
Se Loughlin took U20 Northern silver with an impressive 15:35.44 PB 5,000m time. A senior silver was claimed by Eliot Jones in the 100m who followed his 10.85s heat with a near best 10.70s in the final. He is, by some margin, the finest sprinter the club has ever had.
In Lancashire slightly different rules apply for ESAA selection and performances are done on the day at
Blackpool. Becky Mitchell took a silver from the U17 Ladies javelin with 31.43m; more remarkable for it being her first competition. She’ll still be U17 next year ! Isaac Dickinson just missed out on a medal in the junior boys 800m finishing 4th in 2:12.9 min.
