The Ormskirk Gingerbread 10k attracted a large number of local athletes. Liverpool Pembroke Sefton`s Sam Wade was immediately prominent among the leading men from the start. The flat course and fine weather contributed to fast times. Sam was never troubled by any of the other females, even chatting to some of the men en route , as she coasted to her first road race win with a 42.53 timing. Considering she had undergone a serious operation early in the year and started a demanding teaching job recently this was a truly amazing run and a tribute to her courage and determination.
The Wirral 10K and Half Marathon was held on the same day. In the 10K Mark Wynne, who is having a sensational start to the winter season, finished 8th with 34.39 chopping over a minute off his previous best set a fortnight earlier at Southport. Regular racing certainly suits his style. In the Half Marathon there was a welcome return for Ben Costello as he came home 5th with a good time of 75.34. Similarly it was great to see Matt Thompson(18th) also back in action with 84.04. Finally, words cannot do justice to the exploits of 67 year old John Dobie who was 112th in a large field with an extraordinary timing of 93.58.
