The beginning of the Track and Field season had seen Michael Rimmer showing signs of a return to his best which included winning the national 800m title for a record number of times. However, a disappointing Commonwealth Games Championships indicated that the stress fracture in his back had reappeared. This was confirmed in the European Championships in Zurich as he failed to survive his first round heat finishing sixth in a modest 48.51. Questions will now have to be faced about his future in the sport but at 28 he still has scope for recovery and a return to the fitness that saw him take silver in the Euros some four years ago.
