This the time of year when track and field aspirants test themselves in various open meetings. Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton mini-star Lauren Lewis was at both the Blackpool and Warrington meets. At the seaside event she set a new club record for the Under 13 80m with 10.9 and at Victoria Park she ran 75m in 10.6. The latter time takes her to the joint top position in the UK rankings. She now holds an impressive clutch of club records for 75m, 80m and 100m.
The London Marathon festival includes `mini-marathons’ for younger athletes. After an impressive winter both Rosie Johnson and Daniel Slater were singled out to represent the North West. Rosie had a great run in the Under 17s completing the course in 16.36 and just missing out on a podium position in fourth spot. Daniel at Under 15 was 30th out of a large field in 16.00 in his race. Both now turn their attention to the track.
There was a modest turn out at the Liverpool Harrier meeting at Wavertree. Performances catching the eye were Danny Higham`s double 200m runs in 24.0 and 23.5 and Ryan Blackwell`s 800m in 2.01.7. Morgan Greaves-Thomas sparkled at 100m with 11.4. Also at 800m Jonathan Bride(2.10.2) and Jack Crook(2.14.0) opened the season well. Among the younger athletes Fran Price (Year 7) recorded a fine win in her 800m with 2.40.2. Same-year high jumpers. Sadie McNulty(1.25m) and Lauren Ramsey(1.20m) were on form as was Year 6 Scarlet Whitfield(1.18m). Year 7 Joe Houghton looked impressive in his two lapper with 2.37.4 as did Year 8 sprinter Robert Ward, 100m in 13.3 and 200m in 27.3.Lauren Lewis star at early season meeting
